I have to say first off the bat that I haven't read the books. Pretty underwhelming I hope the story in the book was better. After a few incidents, through which they discover that the dictator has killed or kills anyone opposing him, including all the women in the 'town' he rules, they get to the first colony ship, send the signal, the dictator is killed, and the 'cavalry' (second wave colonists) arrive to save the day and it looks like they'll all live happily ever after. The story is simply these two 'fugitives' being chased by a posse of cowboy thugs. Young man, Todd, who's a bit of an outsider, befriends her and they go on the run, to find the first colony ship from which to signal the second wave to come down. She's a threat, because she could call down the colony ship and end the dictator's rule. Into this comes the single female survivor (Viola) of a probe sent by the second wave of colonists. So far, so Stalin, or any other dictator you fancy naming. The man who can best control Noise has become a dictator (the best actor): he controls the information and propaganda, through 'Noise' control, and also the guns he blames their fate and the need for his control on the aliens (indigenous humanoids). The leads play the parts competently, but not charismatically, so the whole thing is okay, but a bit flat. It's also an idea which I think if a reality would lead everyone to be basket cases, not just have a problem to control.

A hard concept to put across cinematically, and ultimately in the film it's an irritating distraction which doesn't change the very simple and predictable plot. Some men control this better than others. On this world they've had to wrestle with 'Noise': all men's (not women's) thoughts are broadcast to all. I gather from other reviews the concept of 'Noise' works better in the books.Ī first wave of colonists, with limited tech, have established what is effectively an American wild west settlement. Todd wakes up on the ship in a medical pod. Todd then fights Le Chiffre, using new found telepathic ability to project images of all the women Le Chiffre murdered. He stumbles away engulfed in flames claiming he is THE sinner. Somehow the crazy noisy preacher creeps up behind Rey and attacks her, as she's trying to send a message to her colony ship, she uses something like a smart phone to explode and set him on fire. The antenna is broken so spidey climbs really high but it's difficult because he doesn't have his spidey powers yet. Todd Spidey helps Rey "Viola" hook up an old derelict transmitter. Todd and Rey find the wreckage of the original ship that brought them to this planet. So, murdered them, including Todd's mum :-( We also learn that Le Chiffre and the crazy preacher had the women in their rubbish settlement murdered, as they couldn't hear women's thoughts, which you would think is a blessing, but they didn't seem to like it. Like how Mens' restrooms/toilets are always rubbish but Women's are all nicely done up and clean. We learn later that there is a nicer settlement, which is run by a woman, women still do exist and they have sheep, farming equipment and electric fences. Instead he was a mild-irritation clumsy-boy throughout. And his son was a Jonas brother, but he didn't sing.

He was mayor of the rubbish settlement where only men lived, the folk lore is that all the women had died or moved on, as there was no Wi-Fi or TV or shops. Le Chiffre was there in a furry coat and hat, rode a horse. Todd cried a lot over his dog (his eyes went really puffy and red), though he tried not to cry but Rey (very supportively) told him that it was ok to cry, since she had no intention of making out with him, EVER, so he didn't have to be manly. Todd had a pet dog, which a crazy preacher drowns :-( while Todd spidey and Rey were trying to get away on Boat down a river then down rapids. Also Rey was called Viola (because she was under cover I presume). And he hasn't yet got his spidey powers because they don't have the technology maybe or something or nothing. Rey crash lands on a planet and Spider man is there, only he's not called Peter, but Todd.

It's not a movie I'll be thinking about re-watching in a years or so time. There are aliens on the planet, but only see one, once in this movie. At the moment both HD and UHD (4k) are inclusive with prime, so watch it if you can. I paid £1.99 to rent the HD version if I'd paid the standard £4.49 I might have been more displeased with this movie. The movie cast some great actors, Mads Mikkelsen, Daisy Ridley, Tom Holland, David Oyelowo but fails to recognise their potential. It's a decent enough movie, could have been great but let down a little by chase scenes that go on for too long.
