It is entirely likely that this may not be my last word on this subject. I suggest that the rules would be more attractive on the side of the side notes (awful turn of phrase) that face the main text - right side rule for side notes on the left (text also right-justified), and left side rule for notes on the right)- and from which all the arrows can start. In the original, the side notes (both left and right) have colored rules on their left. Pros: Excerpts are editable (very editable actually). Comparison for me is like this: MarginNote. Although upon connection inspection, it seems like it doesn't have any unusual activity. I just blocked its inbound and outbound connections on my Macbook.
Adobe and marginnote code#
Second, in the course of writing my code, I found a small problem for which Steven speedily supplied a fix, with more on the way my code contains the original fix. So far have ended up using Marginnote and sticking to it. If you run the code and it looks simply awful, then just run it again and all should be well. Two important things: First, this code requires to be run twice. The example code uses a large number of the tweaks, and will repay close inspection. The code, though prolix, is fairly straightforward and reasonably well commented. Fortunately, Steven Segletes came brilliantly to the rescue as you can see for yourself: Is it possible to highlight and underline at the same time? (also serves as an excellent and practical object lesson in the extraordinary usefulness of being a part of this community). I was at a loss to see how, in TeX, both to underline and highlight text at the same time. The following code allows for a relatively large number of tweaks. Even so, there is generally at least some tweaking of the final result to get something that approximates reasonably closely to an ideal. The advantage that TeX has (or, rather, one of them) is that some of the more tedious tasks in creating a document such as this can be - to a certain extent - automated.
The example that you show was likely created with the help of Adobe's InDesign or Illustrator, or similar software, which I used and supported for years. The simplemargins package can be found at /mit/sipb/share/tex/macros/simplemargins.sty if you simply want to render your document to another format and don't care about future editing.Welcome to StackExchange! If you are working on a document using this package, we recommend you convert it to use the geometry package instead. This package was created by SIPB and is not part of standard LaTeX distributions. You may see older LaTeX files at MIT that use the simplemargins package. This may interact poorly with other packages. The fullpage package, simply by virtue of including it, will change your document to use 1 inch margins on all sides. The \oddsidemargin and the \evensidemargin are both changed because LaTeX has two side margins, one for odd pages and one for even pages. These commands decrease the margin on one side then increase the text size by double that decreased amount, thereby decreasing both the left and right margins (or top and bottom in the second group of commands) by the same amount. Make sure you have an up-to-date version of Adobe. These commands would be placed in the preamble of your document (prior to \begin). Its easy to add margin notes, comments, highlights and sticky notes to online PDFs with Adobe Reader.
